Activities addressed to large public

University of the third age

Between October and November 2025, a five-lesson course was organized at the University of the Third Age in Pinerolo (Turin, Italy), specifically designed for elderly participants. The course focused on increasing awareness of environmental and food contaminants, addressing their sources, potential risks, and impacts on human health. Two of the lessons were specifically dedicated to SusWater research topics, providing participants with insights into current scientific research on water quality, sustainability, and contaminant monitoring. The activity promoted active discussion and engagement, and was carried out with the participation of UNITO researchers A. Giacomino and P. Inaudi.

The road of discoveries

From 6th to 18th October 2025 in Turin (Italy), a street-based activity was carried out to engage the public. During the event, experiments were demonstrated, the project was explained, and both young and elderly people were actively involved. The activity was conducted with the participation of UNITO researchers O. Abollino, A. Giacomino, and P. Inaudi.

Settimana della Scienza

Sharing science is always a great idea, especially when it engages students of all ages in meaningful and hands-on experiences.
On June 4th, 2025, more than 350 elementary and high school students took part in small science experiments at the 'Le Serre' cultural park in Grugliasco.

Elementary school activities

On May 21, 2025, Federica Dal Bello carried out an outreach activity for elementary school students focused on The SusWater Project. The initiative introduced key concepts related to water sustainability and environmental protection through age-appropriate explanations and interactive examples. The activity aimed to raise early awareness of water-related challenges and to stimulate curiosity and interest in science.

Week of girls and women in Science

In February 2025, María José López Muñoz delivered a presentation for elementary school students at C.E.I.P. Manuel de Falla in Fuenlabrada, within the framework of the Semana de la Niña y la Mujer en la Ciencia (Week of Girls and Women in Science). The activity aimed to promote interest in science from an early age and to encourage gender equality in scientific careers, engaging pupils through age-appropriate explanations and interactive discussion.

Bricherasio palace activities

On 14th November 2024, a dissemination event was held in Bricherasio, Turin, Italy, focusing on “Environmental and food pollution: old contaminants and new protagonists” in collaboration with the SPONDE project. The evening included presentations and discussions aimed at raising awareness on environmental and food-related pollutants. The activity was conducted with the participation of UNITO researcher A. Giacomino.

European Researchers' Night 2022

SusWater people of UNITO and POLITO participated at the UNIGHT in Turin (30th September - 1st October 2022).

An engaging experience that involved Suswater's researchers with the aim of enhancing the dialogue between citizens and science and of sharing their research activities to the general public.

European Researchers' Night 2024

Several ERS and ER from UNITO team partecipated at the European Researchers' Night, held on 27th and 28th September 2024 in Turin, in collaboration with the IN2AQUAS research group.

The SusWater project team has addressed this issue by offering the public interactive games, debates and readings for adults and children!

European Researchers' Night 2025

This year, the SusWater ER and ERS participated in Researchers' Night, offering interactive activities for children and adults.
The activity took place in Turin’s Valentino Park on September 27, 2025, in collaboration with the IN2AQUAS group, and was part of the European Researchers’ Night 2025 initiative. A related outreach event was also held on September 26, 2025, in Savigliano (Cuneo, Italy). During both activities, experiments were demonstrated and the project was explained, actively involving elementary and middle school students through hands-on and interactive approaches.

SusWater lab

  • A SusWater lab has been set up and has been presented by Paola Calza, Elisa Gaggero and Monica Rigoletto to high school students at UNITO during APERTAMENTE “ApertaMenteChimica”, 13th -14th May 2022, University of Turin, Turin, Italy.

  • SusWater Lab at University of Torino, Dept. Chemistry (14th February 2023). It was performed within the framework of GWB2023-Global Women’s Breakfast 2023-Breaking Barriers in Science, organized by IUPAC, with the title “A morning with SusWaterlab@UNITO”. Target group: secondary school students.
Local SusWater team: Paola Calza, Debora Fabbri, Federica Spina, Enzo Laurenti, Mery Malandrino, Agnese Giacomino, Claudio Medana, Elisa Gaggero, Monica Rigoletto, Paolo Inaudi and Marco Sangermano
  • SusWater Lab at University of  Torino, Dept. Chemistry (6th February 2024). Water is a precious and irreplaceable resource for life on earth, but unfortunately it is also a limited resource and increasingly at risk due to multiple factors including pollution and excessive exploitation. What are researchers doing to recover and improve water quality? In this laboratory activity the students will have the opportunity to experiment it "in the field", carrying out some experiments in the laboratory relating to the removal of organic and inorganic pollutants from water by exploiting processes developed in European scientific projects (SusWater, IN2AQUAS) by researchers from the Department of Chemistry.    Audience: students of Secondary schools, Scientific Degree Plan (PLS)-

Summer School

27th-30th June 2023, Turin

CHEMISTRY: “The thousand faces of water: properties, uses, treatments and reuse”

A journey that, oscillating between the microscopic and the observable, tells the story of the properties of water and the efforts to be made to preserve it, keep it clean and make it available to all

The activity includes an introductory part relating to the properties of water from a chemical point of view. This will be followed by a large laboratory section in which experiments and observations will be carried out on different aspects of water treatment and in particular on innovative methods of treating the most resistant pollutants.

Participants: E. Laurenti, D. Fabbri, M. Rigoletto.
